General Safety
Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
Always check every weapon you pick up, pass to someone or leave.
Always check every weapon that is passed to you.
Never point a weapon at anyone and never allow anyone to point a weapon at you.
Always keep the muzzle of a firearm pointed in a safe direction (normally down range).
Never leave a weapon loaded. Unload and make safe immediately after use.
Make sure weapons are and ammunition are always secure especially from children.
Range Safety
Always obey the rules of the Range Officer.
Never go down the range without the permission of the Range Officer.
Never load a weapon until after the “commence firing” signal has been given.
Always cease firing as soon as the signal to do so is given.
Unload and open the action of a weapon after the “cease firing” command has been given. Remove the magazine if the weapon has one. Lay the weapon on its side with the exposed action visible to the Range Officer.
Do not handle a weapon whilst persons are in front of the firing position.
Do not distract shooters whom are still firing after you have finished.
If you have a mis-fire keep the weapon pointing down the range and wait for thirty seconds before removing the cartridge. Give the cartridge to the Range Officer for safe disposal. New members should inform the Range Officer whom will clear the cartridge and dispose of it accordingly.
Remove your weapon and ammunition promptly after finishing shooting.
Always tidy the range after shooting by removing spent cases and shot cards.
Safety Whilst Cleaning Weapons
Always
check the weapon is unloaded.
Only remove parts necessary for cleaning and use only the correct tools.
Use proper cleaning tools and solvents to remove dirt, soft patches or phosphor-bronze brushes. NOT abrasive materials.
Wipe metal parts with oiled cloths and woodwork with wood care polish or oils.
Ensure weapon is put away with mechanism springs relaxed.
